Traumatology
Trauma surgery is about operative repair of the musculoskeletal system. This includes bone, tendon, muscle and articulations. Articulations consist of a capsule, synovia (mucous membrane), ligaments and cartilage. Cartilage covers bone in articulations. A meniscus is a semicircle made of elastic cartilage.
What happens after an accident ?
The trauma surgeon’s task is to re-establish function to the injured musculoskeletal system as well as possible. In doing so he may use different techniques. For the treatment of fractures plates, screws, pins, nails and wire made of stainless steel or titanium are used. Tear of ligaments, tendon and meniscus can be sutured using special threads. Bandages, splints, plaster casts, crutches and special shoes are also being used.
